Deerwomon's story...

“When I moved to Arkansas in 1985 I was drawn to the natural clay that was everywhere. My organic response was to pick it up and play with it. My womyn spirit s’elf moved through my hands and created a goddess, angel-like be-ing.

I naturally left it out in the sun to dry and the moonlit sky covered her. The next few days she dried and I was very pleased. Again my womyn-spirit s’elf spoke to me and gave me her name, “Shamoon” because she is womyn-made, she-sha and of the Earth. And the moon covered her.

Thus Sha-moon.

These clay sculptures continue to unfold as a community. Originals are and continue to be air or sun dried, the later shamoons are fired terra cotta and the larger shamoons are called the Breathing Series. They represent the reminder that breath is life and we need to remember to breathe.”

The small sculptures measure 2” to 3” wide by 5” to 8” high and are made from grey or terra cotta clay…when available the clay is harvested from travels, and then air dried.

These sculptures are named “Shamoons” representing the energy of the moon and of the Mother Earth.

Deerwomon has been sculpting Shamoons since 1985 beginning with hand gathered clay from Arkansas.
