Improv becomes a personal journey of exploration,
expression and release. The foundation of the work is to be real and able
to uncover one's true sensations. Breath awareness, stillness and centering
are all the keys to having clear translation of what one is feeling in each
and every moment. Then the next level is having the confidence and courage
to emote and put out in space the emerging form of the sensations and feelings.
This is the context of the work, the fuel
of inspiration.
Improvisation is a "metaphor" and perhaps a teaching tool for life.
The techniques are a practice of being "present", reminding self
to breathe fully, developing awareness of body and sensations and communicating
creatively and genuinely.
The dynamics of solo and group interaction readily reveal relationshipping
patterns, communication pathways and creative interaction. The combined movement
and voice expression allows for innovative means of expressing more realms
and dimensions of s'elf. Where language tends to limit and set boundries for
our expressive s'elves improvisation opens the doors to practically creating
our own language as we go along. These skills invite vocalization and movement
as an alternative expression and release to experiences and sensations that
have no words or would be restricted by the attempt to give them words. Thus
a new vocabulary unfolds. Phrasing, punctuation, sentence structuring all
becomes open to reconsideration and inspired evolution. There are no boundries
to the allowance of our new s'elves emerging.
This limitlessness is what offers "freedom". The freedom becomes
vast territory in experiencing all levels of expansiveness, spasciousness,
growth, imagination, reflection and understanding of the cycles of death and
rebearth. Improv creates a fertile turf for personal transformation. The experience
of freedom in-courages and inspires a certain altered-ness that opens us to
newness and what I refer to as our "genius" moments. It is the "genius"
moments that remind us of how rich and potent we truly are. And it is these
moments that the daily burdens and density of the mundane can be lifted just
enough to see the hopefullness and vibrancy of the world that surrounds us.
These moments inspire, vitalize, rejuvenate and unfold new prospects for the
future, new prospects for the very here and now.
